NW Campus offers students a wide variety of water activities on Marine Creek Lake to participate in during the spring semester.
“The waterfront is so unique to our campus, and we are very proud of it,” NW health and physical education associate professor Joshua Tarbay said.
Students can take classes in sailing, swimming, kayaking and canoeing as well as use boats for camping and backpacking.
The kinesiology and police departments at NW do not allow students to use the lake unsupervised on their own time, so it is best that students register for a class.
NW aviation instructor David Hill has taken both levels of the sailing class and recommends it for students.
“This is an unique opportunity for students and a very fun one too,” he said. “Not many schools offer that type of course like we do here.”
NW will also have the grand opening of its disc golf course in late April, which is featured right on the lake’s waterfront, NW HPE instructor Joseph Maestas said. A club is also available for interested students.
Several classes outside of the typical in-water activities use the lake as well, Tarbay said.
“It’s important to know how pivotal the lake is for enhanced instruction,” he said. “For instance, yoga does several waterfront days, as does dance. Disc golf runs along our lake. We have a one-mile fitness trail with equipment, and the new Fort Worth Trinity Trails has an eight-mile loop around the lake. Folks stop by to fish, read books and sometimes just fly a kite. It really is a huge part of the campus.”
Students can access the disc golf course and running trails at any time and can even check out bikes and other equipment from the fitness center.
Students looking for more information regarding the water activities can contact the NW fitness center at 817-515-7641 or go to WHPE.
