South president to award scholarships

By Martin Paredes/south news editor

South president Peter Jordan will host a scholarship breakfast 8:30-10 a.m. March 24 in the SSTU Forum Room where $500 scholarships will be awarded.

Five students who best answered “How has Tarrant County College South Campus contributed to my student success?” will receive the awards. The winners are required to attend the event and read their essays to attendees.

Those planning on attending should RSVP to learning lab manager Gabrielle Raymond at 817-515-4608.

Raymond explained how the writing center helped students who were writing essays.

“What is good with us being involved in this kind of thing, though, is that now we had a very specific question that students were responding to,” she said. “We talked about scholarship essays in general and some of the components about them, things like making sure that it was personal [and] that it had an attention-getter.”

Academic advisor Deshun Jackson got involved with the event because she previously worked with scholarships at the University of Texas at Arlington.

“Anything that involves student success, I really, really take a major concern in,” she said. “These scholarships are TCC’s way of rewarding students that do what they need to do.”

Jackson used to work as a success coach and was adamant that she was always trying to help students get free money.

“There are a lot of opportunities out there,” she said. “Sometimes, students just don’t know how to go about asking for it.”

Jackson said she loved being a resource for students, so she had her coordinator run a report that discovered over 24,000 students were eligible for the scholarships being offered. Despite this, applications last year were in the low 20s.

When finding out about the available scholarships, South nursing student Cindy Mora was inspired to enter.

“That’s awesome,” she said. “I’ll definitely throw myself into that. Who doesn’t like free money?”
