Students met for a sobremesa luncheon to practice speaking Spanish and eat Mexican food with classmates in North Richland Hills Nov. 9.

“I want students to have fun, get to know each other and practice their Spanish,” NE Spanish assistant professor Erika Barragan said.

Sobremesa literally translates to “around the table,” and it’s an integral part of Hispanic culture as a means of relaxing and hanging out after a meal.

The sobremesa event allows students to immerse themselves in Hispanic culture, learn something new and practice using the Spanish language in a relaxed environment.

Spanish students are welcome to attend, and everyone is encouraged to speak Spanish, regardless of skill level. The sobremesa serves as a time students can immerse themselves in Hispanic culture and learn something new, Barragan said.

While some students attend the lunch for the extra credit points, others see it as a form of practical learning in a relaxed environment.

NE Spanish student Margaret Whit likes seeing people from her class and enjoys getting to know students from other classes.

“I like trying to speak, and if I get something wrong, I’ll remember to say it right next time,” Whit said.

Sobremesa luncheons are held monthly at Cristina’s restaurant at 959 Grapevine Highway.
