NW show will highlight mix of dance types

By Kelli Henderson/entertainment editor

The NW dance and touring companies will perform Momentum: Raising the Barre 7:30-9:30 p.m. April 13-14 at the Scott Theatre in Fort Worth.

Because guests are brought in to dance, this annual performance can sometimes include up to 100 dancers, dance professor and concert coordinator Lacreacia Sanders said.

“It is based on the idea that we have all abilities and all levels, and it’s a community-integrated company,” she said. “Everybody is sharing what they do.

NW student Blake Durst, who takes a modern/hip-hop class, will be in his first concert. After studying dance through high school, he said he knew it was something he wanted to continue in college. Because the concert is only once a year, Durst said his class started preparing for the concert the first day of the semester.

“It’s been a lot of excitement,” he said. “We’ve been learning so much that it sort of feels overwhelming at times, but it’s amazing.”

Though the show itself does not have a general theme, each piece sticks to one idea or explores an emotion, said NW student Shelbee Linendoll. She will dance in a piece about love, the ups and downs of a relationship and the different emotions that come with relationships. She said the piece consists of a mixture of styles from ballet to hip-hop and jazz.

Though there are dance students in the show, the performance is not directed at just dance majors. Because of the wide variety and blend of styles, Linendoll said everyone should enjoy it.

“Everyone should get a little something out of it. Whether you’re classically trained or just never seen dance before, you should be able to connect with it,” she said.

Tickets are $7 and will be on sale at the Northwest Business Services beginning April 2. For more information, contact Sanders at lacreacia.sanders@tccd.edu or call 817-515-7692.
