Even with the Texas sun beating down, hundreds met and grabbed some lunch from TCC law enforcement at South’s Cookout with the Cops Oct. 5.
South TCC Police Department and Crime Prevention Unit officers served up flame-grilled hot dogs and burgers for participants.
Each year, the event continues to grow, said South student activities coordinator Ana Garcia.
“We even had to start cooking and serving burgers earlier,” Garcia said.
Following the procession line, students met with Officer Abu Baba and learned vital safety tips.
“For safety, when walking to your car, have your keys ready,” Baba said. “You can use them as a weapon and quickly unlock your door.”
For those seeking assistance, the TCC Police Department is available 24/7 even when the campus is closed.
“I appreciate that there is a police department on campus,” said Lele Huynh. “It is faster to contact them than 911.”
While many incoming freshmen met officers during orientation, some returning students missed out on the opportunity.
“It’s really cool, and it gives everyone the chance to get to talk to the cops and hang out,” South student Emmaline Canales said.
Tarrant County Justice of the Peace Sergio De Leon, who was the guest speaker, said he was glad he attended.
“As a former law enforcement officer, I truly appreciate the work, professionalism and dedication of all men and women who serve at each level of law enforcement, especially our college police department,” De Leon said. “Our officers put themselves on the line and in harm’s way in order to protect all of us.”
