Much has changed in the music industry since Sade’s last album Lovers Rock appeared 10 years ago.
And despite declining record sales and the availability of music online, the reclusive singer has released a new album, Soldier of Love. Despite a career of heart-breaking songs, Sade never seems to reveal too much to the listener.
Nothing has changed with Sade, even at 51. No gimmicks or auto-tune, just good music.
The album opens with her band’s signature blend of R&B and jazz on “The Moon and the Sky.” She talks about past relationships on the smooth, but heart-smothering song.
“You’ll always know, the reason why we could have had the moon and the sky,” she sings.
The single, “Soldier of Love” has a military-patterned beat with guitar riffs that will keep listeners bobbing their heads. She talks about her hardships with old relationships.
“I’ve lost the use of my heart, but I’m still alive, still looking for the life,” she sings.
“Baby Father” is one of the more uplifting songs anyone will ever hear on a Sade album. Instead of her usual taste for heartbreak, she sings about meeting a guy.
“She liked his eyes she wanted more, the baby gonna have your smile for sure he saw a lovely girl,” she says.
“Be That Easy” sounds like the song was meant for Norah Jones, but it still works with Sade’s whispery voice.
Soldier of Love is a great album that mirrors Sade’s past work. She keeps the album tight with 10 tracks.
Longtime fans will enjoy the album, especially after the 10-year wait.
