Academic centers offer tutoring on TR, South

The centers for academic success on South and TR campuses work to help students improve their college skills.

“It’s the one-stop academic shop simply because everything that you need that you don’t get in the classroom, you can get here,” said Chris Carcerano, South center coordinator.

The centers offer programs such as free tutoring and also appointment-based tutoring. Tutors are certified and trained to help students.

“We offer tutoring in every subject,” said Stevie Blakely, TR discovery center coordinator. “Our goal is to help students.”

Both centers schedule College Student Success workshops throughout the semester. These seminars include topics such as how to find a job, how to talk to a professor, how to handle stress and how to take tests.

South seminars are held at various times, days and locations throughout the semester while TR’s sessions are noon-1 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in TRTR 3102.

Carcerano said some of the problems students have come from not understanding technology. The center provides training classes and tutors to help them learn computer basics.

South’s center offers free printing. Students can print up to 20 pages a day. It also has an in-house book lending program.

“Over 750 students used this program last semester,” Carcerano said. “It’s very helpful when students have ordered books online and they are not in yet.”

Carcerano said the centers are more than just a few services.

“We’re about developing the whole student,” he said. “The hardest part is learning how to attend college. We teach people how to master college.”

Students interested in the centers for academic success can visit SACA 1120 on South or the TRTR 3102 on TR.
