The NE Tennis Club competed in a team tournament Sept. 24 in Arlington, placing second in its division out of eight teams.

The NE team beat out the University of Texas to make it to the finals, a team they lost to in a Sept. 17 tournament in Denton when it placed third in its division. In the finals, TCC competed against a team from Texas A&M, coming close to victory but losing 24-20.

“I was surprised that we placed second,” club president Wes Edwards said. “We have a lot of newer players on our team, and they really held their own this tournament.”

Edwards has been club president for almost two years and looks forward to seeing how far the team will go in its upcoming tournaments.

“We have a really good chance at going further in our Oct. 22 tournament,” he said. “We have even more players and are able to bring two teams.”

The scoring system for each tournament is based on the World Team Tennis format.

“This is a team tournament where men and women compete together as a team in doubles, singles and mixed doubles,” club adviser/coach Tim Sebesta said. “The team with the most games after all the events wins the match.”

The players who competed were Edwards, Corey Johnson, Hoang Ta, Joseph Martella, Kevin Suarezscott, Peter Cole, Karrabi Blankenship, Melanie Jones, Abigail Harsley and Ingrid Orozco. The players have two more tournaments coming up: one in Waco Oct. 22 and the state tournament in February in Austin.
