Defense dominant factor in SE Campus volleyball tourney

By Eric Poe/sports editor

Balls ’n’ Dolls claimed the four-on-four coed SE volleyball tournament Nov. 11, sweeping Autobots three games to none in the final.

Leading up to the final match, Balls ’n’ Dolls had to overcome Baby Punchers, who won SE Campus’ sand volleyball tournament in the spring, and Undecided.

Balls ’n’ Dolls was led by Nota Bradley.

“He was a standout,” SE intramural coordinator Shahzad Nazir said. “He had a lot of spikes, and his serves were just as hard.”

The tournament had only six teams, but that did not take away from the competitiveness.

“We had half the teams we had in the spring,” Nazir said. “But quality-wise, it was amazing.”

Balls ’n’ Dolls followed the formula for coed volleyball success, Nazir said.

“You have two guys who can crush the ball and two girls who can play some defense and set the ball well,” he said.

Defense is what separated the teams, and Autobots struggled with theirs, Nazir said.

“Defense was the big difference-maker,” he said. “It’s what makes the teams go.”
