Distance learning semester opening

By Gary Collins/managing editor

Students who missed registering for distance learning classes for the fall semester now have a second chance.

Students can enroll for the spring 2008 distance learning six-week classes, which run March 10 to April 22.

“Distance learning allows students flexibility and convenience,” Kevin Eason, director of distance learning said.

TCC distance learning courses include computer-delivered and instructional television classes. Tuition is the same per credit hour as for the traditional classes.

Registration for distance courses is available through WebAdvisor on the TCC Web site or by logging onto

The distance learning courses may require additional costs: purchasing computer software, hardware and textbooks.

Distance learning may also require different textbooks than an on-campus class.

CDI courses may have on-campus orientations. Requirements vary from each class depending on the method of instruction.

Although more flexible, distance courses do require commitment to meet weekly deadlines.

“I do recommend that students be cautious especially with the Internet courses,” Eason said. “[Students] need to be savvy and motivated and disciplined enough to keep track of the assignments.”

The ITV courses come with several viewing options such as video on demand, on-campus viewing or a VHS kit lease.

DVDs are available for some courses. Some on-campus classes are available for the six-week term.

Remember, if logging in to WebAdvisor for the first time since Feb. 19, students must select a new password that has at least 15 characters.

Testing for all distance learning courses are administered through campus testing centers.

For out-of-area testing, students must obtain approval from the director of distance learning before enrolling in a course.
