Mardi Gras festivities planned on SE Campus

By Shelly Williams/se news editor

As a way to encourage students to try new things, SE student activities will present Beads in the Bistro, a Mardi Gras celebration, Feb. 24 in the Bistro.

Student activities will distribute the gold, purple and green beads — the colors of Mardi Gras — and other small Mardi Gras trinkets for the students. To receive the beads and gifts, students just need to attend the event.

Nita Haliburton of SE student activities said the event will give students more of an understanding of Mardi Gras.

“They will learn that Mardi Gras means ‘Fat Tuesday’ and is celebrated the day before the beginning of Lent seasons for Easter,” she said.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, the day after Mardi Gras.

“Mardi Gras is the time to party hard because you won’t be able to party hard again until 40 days … Easter,” she said. “You don’t have to be Catholic to celebrate Mardi Gras, but if you understand the reason it’s celebrated, then a better understanding can occur between people of different faiths and ideas.”

Beads in the Bistro will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the SE Campus Bistro. Admission is free.
