Bravo, TCC, for going green

TCC has become more environmentally friendly and healthy over this past year, which should earn the attention and the thanks of students.

Campuses have offered students several “Going Green” seminars in past semesters and continue to offer more throughout this semester to help students not only save money but keep the college environment clean.

As college students with high tuition and book bills, we know saving money is important. Teaching students techniques both environmentally helpful and valuable can create good habits to use later in life or in current homes.

SE Campus was named a “Tree Campus” for 2009 by the Arbor Day Foundation for maintaining its environment-friendly nature.

The award had such an impact that SE Campus decided to work on incorporating its trees into science curriculum related to biology, geology, geography and architecture to help take care of them — teaching students the importance of a clean environment and learning the different kinds of trees.

South Campus will offer classes in green technology in the fall. The courses will prepare students for a workforce that recently has begun to lean toward green environmental jobs like energy conservation and wind energy. Many of the campuses also offer seminars about “green collar” jobs for students wanting to work in the industry.

Originally starting heavy on NE Campus, all TCC campuses now work hard to recycle. The more students who join the campuses to help recycle, the more environmentally safe TCC will become.

This past year alone, TCC campuses recycled 152 tons of material.

With five different locations, TCC has done excellent work by taking responsibility for the landscape of their campuses. The district is taking advantage of an opportunity to help lead in the green movement by getting students involved in making better choices for the land that simply surrounds the college.

The best way to lead is by example. TCC has done great by this philosophy. Thank you for keeping the college green, clean and environmentally friendly.
