NW plans dance for troops

By Bethany Peterson/nw news editor

Candy to give the children — that’s what TCC alumnus Lance “Craig” Springer asked friends to send him while he was a soldier before he was killed in Iraq.

Now the Northwest Campus Dance Club is continuing Springer’s giving love by giving back to troops.

The club is sponsoring a Sadie Hawkins Day Dance and Dance-Off 7:30-10 p.m. Feb. 12 in WSTU 1103. The event is open to TCC students and the public.

Ticket sales and donations will go to Homes for Our Troops, an organization that builds homes free of charge for soldiers who have received disabling injuries while in service.

After his death, Springer’s sister, Michelle, a TCC student and then-president of the Northwest Dance Club, wanted to do something to help other soldiers.

Under Michelle Springer’s leadership, the Northwest Dance Club had a car wash last spring to raise money for Homes for Our Troops, but the club wanted to do something different this year.

“We wanted something we could do annually, around Valentine’s Day, which is about love,” said Amy Sleigh, NW dance associate professor.

This way the club can keep Lance Springer’s mission of love going strong in the season of love, Sleigh said.

Dance music will include swing, big band and Latin in a fun, family-friendly atmosphere, Sleigh said.

TCC dance instructors will give demonstrations and teach a few quick steps before dances.

The night will climax with a dance-off.  Competing couples will dance until the judges who are walking around tap their shoulders to say they are out. The last couple standing will receive a dinner for two.

Northwest Dance Club secretary Danielle Flores said she would probably attend with her son.

Flores also said she expects a good turnout of dance students who have been active in dance events and past fundraisers.

Tickets will be sold at the door: $7 a person, $10 for a couple.
