Outdoor recreation area opens for campus

NE Campus’ kinesiology department will hold an event for students and faculty to celebrate the newly refurbished NHPE outdoor recreation area 10 a.m.-3 p.m. March 8.

The “grand opening” event will feature multiple activities. Outdoor bubbleball soccer and sand volleyball will be available for the length of the event. A golf contest will be held 12:30-1 p.m. while tennis will run 1-2 p.m. and pickleball 2-3 p.m. The event will also feature a live DJ as well as free snow cones and popcorn.

The purpose for the event is to “showcase all that we [the kinesiology department] have going on,” NE kinesiology instructional associate and event director Shane Whitehead said. “We have the new sand volleyball courts, the newly resurfaced tennis courts, a new outdoor basketball court. We have four new pickleball courts.”

NE kinesiology department head Kevin Harper said he wants the students to realize just how good the facilities are.

“We have a lot that gyms don’t have including the pool, the tennis courts, the racquetball courts … the full-length basketball, volleyball,” he said.

Continuing education instructor Kim Kerby-Dickman, who is in charge of tennis for the event, said the tennis segment will promote the newly resurfaced tennis courts and include matches and drills with a focus on general fundamentals of the sport.
