Speakers to propose education for WHM

By Michelle Terronez/reporter

In recognition of Women’s History Month, South Campus will present Want Peace? Educate Women next week.

Presenters Altheria Gaston, instructor of education on South, and Bhavani Parpia, director of the International Business Initiative for Hurst Euless Bedford ISD, hope this event will inform and inspire students in educating women.

One of many events on South Campus to highlight Women’s History Month, this seminar on Tuesday, March 4, is designed to bring attention to the struggles and accomplishments women around the country have faced, Gaston said,

And by providing an education for women, Gaston said, it will benefit the world bringing peace and solving a lot of the world’s problems.

Gaston and Parpia will also discuss the efforts of Greg Mortenson, who has done work in Pakistan, bringing education to girls. Mortenson is the co-founder of Pennies for Peace, a non-profit organization that provides educational opportunities to children in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Another focus topic is Oprah Winfrey, her Leadership Academy for Girls and Winfrey’s views on the positive benefits of educating women.

“[The seminar will] make people aware of the necessity of providing a good education for women, particularly in developing countries,” Gaston said.

And from this event, Gaston said she hopes the audience members will be inspired to do whatever they can to help in educating women.

The seminar begins at 11:15 a.m. in the SSTU Texas Room.

Although the seminar focuses on educating women, Gaston said the event is open to everyone.

“I hope to reach out to any student interested in education and helping people from developing countries,” she said.
