The NE Campus intramural basketball tournament is over, and Team Hernandez will represent the campus in the District Cup tournament April 1-2.
Team Hernandez beat Team Adams 59-47 in the championship game March 11. Team captain T.J. Hernandez scored 27 points, including seven three-pointers.
“It was a good game, but then I just started going off,” he said. “They went into a 2-3 zone, so I just came up and shot it every time, and that’s how I got the seven 3’s.”
Teammate Theo Udeme had 12 points in the win, and David Roseneau had eight points to help Hernandez to the championship.
Team Adams, who advanced to the championship game through the losers bracket, beat Team Faculty 48-42 and then Team Finnell 54-42 to set up the championship game with Team Hernandez.
“They tried to tell us that they would have won if they didn’t have to play three games in a row,” Hernandez said. “So I just told them it wasn’t our problem they were in the losers bracket. We didn’t have to waste any of our energy because we got everything right the first time.”
NE was the first campus to determine its representative for the district tournament.
NE intramural director Bart Desender said he likes his campus’ chances in the district tournament.
“They’re definitely a good team,” he said.
Members of Team Hernandez play basketball with each other on an almost daily basis in the NE gym, and Desender sees that as being a big advantage for them.
“It’s tremendous, and that’s the key,” he said. “Basketball is a team sport, and they have the talent. So just by seeing how well they play together in the gym, you can tell that’s going to make a huge difference.”
Team Hernandez is scheduled to take on the TR Campus champions at 4:30 p.m. April 1 for its first game of the district tournament in the South Campus gym.
