SE holds job fair to help students

Dress pants, a dress shirt, a resume and a good attitude are the only requirements for the Jan. 27 Back to School Back to Work Job Fair on SE Campus.

“Tuition and books are a big part of a student’s needs at the beginning of the semester,” said Gina Maloy, who heads career and student services on SE Campus. “We understand that students need extra help at this time, particularly in the semester, which is why we are one of the only campuses to put on the job fair at the very beginning of the semester.”

The fair runs 2-6 p.m. in the Main Commons and will consist of 15-20 different employers looking to hire new part-time and full-time employees. Six Flags, Avon, JPS Health Network and FedEx are some of the employers who will attend.

The fair was moved to the afternoon this year to attract more students, Maloy said.

“There were students coming and asking the question of why the job fairs were only held in the morning,” she said. “We decided instead of doing this job fair in the morning that we would put it on in the middle of the afternoon so that all students from morning and evening classes will be able to attend and get to have the opportunity to have easy access to different employers if they are in need of a job.”

SE student Dedra Thomas, who works in the career and employment services office, encouraged everyone to attend and take a look around.

“Do not be afraid to come to the job fair,” she said. “If you come with a great positive attitude, I have seen firsthand people get hired on the spot. However, there are people that get called back after the job fair is over for a job as well.”

“People look for all kinds of things when they are hiring someone for a new position,” said SE student James Gilchrist. “Have a resume with your prior work experience on hand, References look very presentable, and with that, you should not have any problems in finding a job at the job fair.”

“I have seen it all,” Thomas said. “There are some major ‘do not do’s’ when coming to the job fair, which consist of do not wear a hat, do not sag your pants, and please do not come to the job fair with wrinkled clothes. Put an iron on them before you leave the house.”

The fair is open to students and the community.
