NE’s music faculty will perform Music Through the Centuries at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in the NSTU Center Corner on NE Campus.
Karen Parsons, along with seven other faculty musicians, will perform with guest musician Pam Adams and NE music students Sam Jones and Jeffrey Scheidel. Also performing will be NE’s Collegiate Chorale under the direction of Bobbie Douglass. Dr. Rebecca Ringer will emcee.
“We will perform works from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic eras and 20th and 21st centuries,” Parsons said.
This is the 10th concert under this title, Parsons said. Among the composers represented will be Mozart, Bach and Schubert. Those attending will hear vocal solos and duets, a chamber choir, duo piano and various other instruments.
“Some students tell me they have never heard live music, believe it or not,” she said. “I guess they only hear music from their iPods, which is great, but there is nothing like hearing live music.”
The music faculty enjoys performing as much as teaching, and the students like to hear them make music, Parsons said. The concert was created for Music Appreciation students to hear music from the major eras of history.
The NE music department performs a multi-century concert each year to introduce their students to a wide range of music. Student Monica Sutter attended a similar concert last spring.
“The listener was allowed a unique taste of all of these periods within one concert, which created an experience that was enriching,” she said. “It gave the listeners the unique chance to hear the differences of each period back to back. I loved being able to hear all of the different styles of music presented from all of the musical periods.”
The performance and a reception afterward are free and open to the public.
