TR students get tips to handle test anxiety

With final exams just around the corner, students received ways to handle test anxiety from a TR counselor April 23.

Lori Leach presented Test-Taking Anxiety, a lunchtime workshop.

“I feel safe in saying likely everyone in this room has experienced some form of testing anxiety,” she said.

Leach covered a wide range of common reasons for possible test-taking anxiety from procrastination to traditional learning disabilities.

“You must first identify a plan in planning for exams, study in phases,” she said. “Most importantly, take your time when preparing.”

Students should read their syllabi to know early on when their tests are, quiz themselves and find what techniques work best for them, Leach said. She advised students to balance out time accordingly, never get too stressed over one answer or be afraid of doing extremely bad on a test.

Leach also gave examples of breathing exercises to help calm students down when experiencing anxiety.

“Always remember to pace yourself,” she said. “And at the end of the day, know it will be fine.”
