Transfer students were honored at TR Campus’ semi-annual transfer celebration Nov. 30.

The celebration recognizes students who met their universities’ transfer requirements to move forward in their academic careers.

TR transfer center coordinator Laura Escamilla, who organized the event, said the celebration creates a networking opportunity for transfer students and those considering transfer options for the future.

“The transfer celebration is not only for transfer students but also students who are considering a four-year university,” she said. “Universities also send campus representatives, which are able to answer any questions students have. It is never too early to begin the transfer process.”

Former transfer student Fernanda Reyes is now working on a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Texas Christian University.

“What I learned here at TCC is to get involved [because] it’s going to up your chances of succeeding,” she said.

During her time at TCC, Reyes was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the Power of the Peer program, the All-Star Leadership program and also served as vice president of the International Student Association.

Reyes said she learned how to give back to her community while expanding her networking by meeting new people.

“My biggest growth was here at TCC,” she said. “That’s why I love it so much. I entered as a super shy student who couldn’t speak in front of a class, who didn’t really have many friends, to this person who could do all that now.”

Reyes said she is now encouraging others to do the same and recommends that future transfer students make an effort to meet their professors.

“Build a good relationship with professors because they will be the ones writing your letters of recommendation, recognizing your work,” she said.
