South Campus’ Phi Theta Kappa Rho Chi Chapter will sponsor Texas Recycling Week Nov. 12-16.
The campaign is designed to help with a growing environmental concern.
More than three billion people, or more than 45 percent of the world’s population, own cell phones.
This increased interest in wireless technology, along with other factors, has brought a global issue to the environment.
Studies indicate more than 500 million tons of cell phones have been trashed worldwide.
This waste, which comes with numerous toxic elements contained in the devices, including lead and arsenic, is discarded in landfills when there is no other viable recycling solution.
“ PTK will help the future of our environment through a week campaign of recycling,” Andrew Hill, PTK public relations officer on South Campus, said.
The club is asking all TCC students, faculty and staff to drop off used cell phones, used phone batteries, used generic batteries and used ink cartridges in designated recycling bins around campus.
Drop off locations include SART 1407A, SFOE 1619A, SFOE 1605A and the campus library.
Phi Theta Kappa plans to take part in Texas Recycling Week on an annual basis, Hill said.
