NE Campus will host its own version of Turkey Trot complete with can drive

By Eric Poe/sports editor

NE Campus will hold its own Turkey Trot at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 18.

The race has been organized in the spirit of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday with each prospective runner required to make a food donation.

“It is open to everybody,” NE HPE instructor Laura Bradford said. “But everyone who runs has to bring at least two canned foods to donate.”

Bradford said the Turkey Trot is always a big food drive, and the organizers donate all the canned foods to the Tarrant County Food Bank.

The 5K race will take place on the NE Campus running track near the tennis courts.

“Three laps around our track is a 5K,” Bradford said. “We will have timers for the serious runners that are competing for the turkey.”

The prizes awarded to the top two finishers are poultry with the winner receiving a turkey and the second-place finisher a chicken, Bradford said.

“It [the prize] seems appropriate,” she said, “with Thanksgiving coming up and all.”

Bradford said the favorite to win the turkey this year is NE student Luis Suarez.

“He’ll probably win it with his sub-six minute mile,” she said.

Bradford, herself a veteran of one marathon, is not overly concerned with winning.

“It’s a fun time,” she said. “It’s very casual.”

Runners can begin signing up the day of the race at 11:30 a.m.
