Horticulture teacher busted on pot charges

By Shelly Williams/editor-in-chief

Calvin Hopkins, a NW Campus horticulture instructional assistant, was placed on paid administrative leave after his arrest Aug. 17 on a second-degree felony marijuana possession charge.

An arrest report by the Wise County Sheriff’s Office said the 53-year-old was charged with having between 50 to 2,000 pounds of pot.

The Wise County Messenger reported Hopkins was arrested with 100 marijuana plants on his property in Indian Springs Ranch near Cottondale.

Hopkins has been charged but not indicted, vice chancellor of administration Bill Lace said.

No further information could be given as the case is still under investigation, a sheriff’s office employee said.

Hopkins did not return phone calls or e-mails from The Collegian seeking comment, and his home number was disconnected.
