Musicians take spotlight on NE

By Matt Fulkerson/reporter

The sounds of percussion-led jazz, fusion and Latin music will soon be heard in NE Campus’ College Hall (NCAB 1111).

NW music instructor Joe Carpenter will take the stage with special guests at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15.

Carpenter, in a concert presented by the NE music department, will showcase his percussion work with guests Jeremy Hull on bass, Thomas Woods on piano and Mario Cruz on saxophone and the electronic wind instrument.

“We’re playing some tricky arrangements,” he said. “I will be soloing over various foot ostinatos in various styles.”

The four musicians make up a quartet well respected in the DFW area as well as being accomplished solo musicians, said NE music department chair Karen Parsons.

Carpenter and Hull make up one-half of the Fort Worth cowpunk band Holy Moly. Cruz has performed with music icons Bruce Springsteen, Lou Rawls and Ray Charles. Woods performs with the Dallas party band Think Big.

Parsons said she hopes students will be inspired to study and practice music after attending the performance.

The free concert is open to the public.
