South celebrates women through dance

By Michelle Terronez/reporter

South and SE Campus dance companies will join forces in April to bring one more event to celebrate Women’s History Month.

The Women’s History Month Dance Concert is a way for students to get a better understanding of what goes on around them on a daily basis, Anthony Glover, South Campus dance teacher assistant, said.

The dance event is open to the public Wednesday, April 2, in the SART Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.

“Our concert is the dance department’s way of acknowledging the importance of celebrating women,” Gypsy Ingram, associate professor of dance, said. “We believe in and support the work that Trish Light does with the Women in New Roles program, and this annual concert was born as our way of supporting that program and their celebration of Women’s History Month.”

Velocity, South Campus dance company under the supervision of Ingram, will perform five dances while Rhapsody Movement Company, the SE Campus dance group under the supervision of Jamie Perrin, instructor of dance, will perform two routines.

At the beginning, these dances at the annual concert were primarily performed by women, but over time Velocity has expanded to both men and women. Both groups will perform a variety of dances—hip hop, traditional styles of jazz, contemporary and African.

Ingram said this concert will take people on a journey with dances that illustrate the full spectrum of life.

“I hope that this dance department’s participation in Women’s History Month will help illuminate the strength and beauty and perseverance of women,” she said.

Ingram said the production is designed to be laid back and fun, and hopefully audience members will leave with a better appreciation of these dancers.
