South will hold Women’s Symposium

By Remy McCool/south news editor

South Campus continues its Women’s History Month celebration with the 14th annual Women’s Symposium 8:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. March 29 in the SSTU Living Room and Dining Hall.

This year’s theme, Enhancing Our World Through Service, celebrates women who have provided exceptional service within their communities.

Psychology associate professor Triesha Light said students “will be inspired and challenged to focus or refocus their goals for their future service to the community or college.”

The symposium will feature over 30 vendors, guest speakers, networking opportunities and a panel discussion.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. in the first-floor lobby area and Dining Room.

Breakfast will follow in the first-floor Faculty Dining Hall.

The official dedication of the Wanda Hill Scholarship will happen during the opening session in the second-floor Living Room.

Attorney and adjunct government instructor Faye Watson will lead a panel discussion, Women in Politics, 9:15-9:40 a.m.

The panel is comprised of members of the South student government association, TCC faculty, FWISD school board and others.

Students can network and visit vendors before the official welcome, which will be given by South student development services vice president Larry Rideaux.

Judge Bobbie Edmonds of Forest Hill Texas Municipal Court will present Women and the Law: What You Need to Know during the general session 11:10-11:50 a.m.

She will then participate in a book signing for her book, The Legal Navigator.

From this presentation, Light said students “will leave with a better knowledge of how important it is to know their basic rights.”

Light hopes students can take away “knowledge, networking and empowerment through the event.”

The symposium is open to the public.
