Lit magazine seeks NE students’ entries

By Gary Collins/reporter

Under the Clock Tower, the literary magazine of NE Campus, is accepting submissions for its fall 2007 competition through Oct. 31.

“ More and more students are participating in this. In fall 2006, we had a record 224 entries. The top third or so advance to the second round of judging,” Rebecca Balcarcel, associate professor of English, said.

Open only to NE students, the UTCT fall competition allows students to show off their artistic talents writing short stories, fiction, non-fiction, essays and poetry and in art and photography.

“ Students wishing to submit poems, fiction or non-fiction pieces should enter by uploading their work at stripedgazelle.org/cgi-bin/competition/applicant,” Balcarcel said. “Artwork should be submitted through

Evelyne Binz in graphics, and students should fill out an entry form.”

In round one of the judging process, a faculty member reads all the submissions. Half are eliminated, and the top half go to the semi-finalists.

In round two, five faculty and two students judge the semi-finalists, awarding first, second, third, fourth places and honorable mention.

The first-place winner will receive a $100 prize, second $75, third $50 and fourth place $25 as well as the honor of being published. Runners-up receive no money, but their works are often published also.

The spring 2007 edition of Under the Clock Tower will be released at a reception Oct. 18, 6:30 p.m. in the NCAB College Hall.
