Athletes anticipate NE season

By John Harden/sports editor

With more than 70 students signed up to play in the NE spring basketball intramural league, instructors look to have one of their biggest turnouts, almost doubling last spring’s participation.

About 40 students participated last spring, but this semester has seen a significant increase.

“I think this will be huge,” said intramural director Bart Desender. “Basketball is a very popular sport, and I’m pretty sure we’ll have a great turnout. I’m expecting at least 80 students.”

Students are looking forward to stepping out on the court to help their team win, but one student looks to contribute without stepping on the court or picking up a ball.

“I’m not playing the semester,” said NE student Dolyn Mayo. “I’m just going to be a coach. I have a team I know will more than likely make it to the finals and may win the championship.”

The tournament starts Friday, and games continue every Friday at 12:45 p.m. in the NHPE gym. Each game will last 50 minutes with 20-minute halves and a 10-minute break between.

The tournament continues through February and ends March 13, when the two top teams compete in the championship game.

Desender also hinted that there could be a possibility for another intercampus tournament.

Last semester, each campus competed against each other in volleyball, soccer and flag football, and this semester basketball could be scheduled.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if [South intramural director Michael] Daniels called me and wanted to schedule another intercampus match-up,” Desender said. “He likes doing those kinds of things.”
