NE speech to tackle learning disabilities

By Victoria Almond/reporter

In the U.S., 1.7 percent of the population reports having a learning disability, totaling 4.6 million Americans, according to TCC’s learning diagnostician.

Larry Gillham will present Learning Problems: Inability, Disability or Using Ability Differently to assist students in understanding what a learning disability is and what it means at 11:30 a.m. March 6 in NBSS 1103.

“The reason doing a presentation like this is so important is that it provides a way for students to recognize that they might have a disability,” he said.

Then, students can learn about accommodations and options available to them, Gillham said.

“If you do have a learning disability, it does not mean you are stupid, dumb or unable — you learn differently,” he said. “The goal is to get the most out of yourself as a student with a learning disability.”
