NE seminar talks about importance of leadership

By Victoria Almond/reporter

The most important part of leadership is character, a NE history instructor said during a student success seminar March 3.

“It is the leader that makes the success, and your success will come through leadership,” Andy Hollinger said.Leadership copy

Hollinger had do’s and don’ts for leaders.

“Never leave the room when they’re choosing leaders,” he said. “Don’t be absent. Pick your own success and growth.”

Personal courage is important, Hollinger said.

“Keep striving,” he said. “Don’t do things comfortably.”

The elements that leadership requires are trust, coherence, confidence, collaboration, competition and contribution, Hollinger said.

“Living by setting the example and by inspiring and empowering others are the actions a leader takes,” he said. “You don’t have to be an expert, but be knowledgeable.”

Donna de Lisser, NE Student Government Association vice president, said she is required to attend two leadership meetings a year.

“I found this presentation extremely helpful,” she said. “SGA has had issues with attendance, so now I can motivate members to return and show they’re important. I want to influence others to step up.”
