In Montford’s memory, her family, friends and peers are commemorating her life through the LeJuana Rachelle Montford Creative Writing Scholarship.

The award is geared toward students planning to major in journalism, mass communication or creative writing.

South student Arianna Banks said having a scholarship in Montford’s name is the perfect way to celebrate her memory.

“I remember talking to her over at the student activities window. She was a doll,” Banks said. “The scholarship does exactly what she loved to do, help people. Even though I’m not a writer, I know the scholarship is going to make someone’s life so much easier.”

One South Campus student will be chosen to receive $885 per semester. The scholarship recipient will be chosen based on academic ability and, although not required, majoring in creative or journalistic writing.

A memorial service and fundraiser event will be held at 5 p.m. Oct. 8 on South Campus.

South student Oliver Barnett, whose dream is to write a published novel, said he is excited to apply for the scholarship and is grateful to be a part of it.

“This [scholarship] is perfect for me and exactly what I need. Even though I didn’t know her, she still managed to find a way to impact my life,” Barnett said. “I want to know more about her. I want to know about the woman who could potentially help me achieve my dream, so I’m looking forward to the memorial service.”

Students transferring from another school or graduating from high school in the spring must submit a current transcript by May 1 and a final transcript by July 8 to the TCC Foundation office.
