Talk to focus on black leaders

By Lee Mendez

TR Campus will host a seminar, Understanding Black Leadership: Revisiting the Longstanding Debate over Nationalism vs. Integration, Feb. 1 11 a.m.-noon in the Tahita Fulkerson Library (TREF 2105).

Jason Shelton, director for African-American studies at the University of Texas at Arlington, will speak about the ideological differences among historical black figures such as Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Marcus Garvey and many others.

The background and ideology of these civil rights figures are varied, and their unique impact on combating social inequality will be the focus of this presentation.

The talk will also focus on recent surveys that provide insight into African-American stances on current political movements centered on social reforms.

This event is open to the public, and no RSVP is required.
