SE student turns boredom into new music talent

By Marley Malenfant/reporter

Does anybody need a piano player at his or her wedding? SE student Josh Bennett can help.

Bennett’s love for music became a gig playing music at weddings. Once Bennett was asked if he could perform, he couldn’t turn the opportunity down.

He’s been playing at weddings for more than a year now.

“Funny story, it started as a fluke,” he said.

“This woman asked me if I played for weddings. I said that I just mess around, and it went from there.”

Bennett taught himself to play piano as well as a few other instruments without ever taking a lesson or reading any music.

“I taught myself out of partial boredom and love for music,” he said. “I’ve been playing piano for about five years now. I can play a little flute, drums, guitar and some percussion instruments. I’ve got too much time.”

SE student Bre Kratzer wishes she had Bennett’s ear for music.

“He taught himself everything,” she said.

“He knows every key. I remember asking him to play something on A-flat major. It was an original song of his and it sounded amazing.”

Bennett doesn’t distribute or record any of his own music, but he said that could change in the near future.

“I have yet to record anything, which is too bad,” he said. “However, people have asked me for a CD or two for birthdays and holiday gifts. I might need to start soon.”
