SE series to explore Africa

Understanding Africa, a new brown bag series on SE Campus, will explore the social, economic and political background of Africa, as well as demonstrate how Africa and Texas can be linked together.
“ Understanding Africa: The Western Image of Africa,” the first seminar, will be for faculty only, Monday, Feb. 27, at 12:30 p.m. in ESED North Ballroom.
In the presentation, Dr. Alusine Jalloh, associate professor of history at UTA, will discuss Africa’s image and explain how key factors such as the transatlantic slave trade and European colonialism have affected how that image is perceived.
Additionally, Jalloh will illustrate how Africans and their descendants in the black diaspora project their image to other countries.
The series is a partnership between TCC and the Africa Program, in which students and faculty have the opportunity to study and travel in Africa.
The Africa Program was founded in 1994 by Jalloh to improve business, technological and educational relations between Africa and North Texas.
Jalloh has written several publications on this topic and has also served as a consultant for WFAA, The Los Angeles Times, The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and Exxon Mobile Corp.
